As the Park Facility Operator under contract to the Province of British Columbia, RLC Park Services is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Parks within the South, Mid and North Vancouver Island Bundles of Provincial Parks. There are no provisions in these contracts for interpretive services (environmental education) or for operating the Goldstream, Rathtrevor Beach or Miracle Beach Nature Houses. However, these Nature Houses have remained open for school programming throughout the year and summer programming and visitation in the summer. How is this possible? RLC Park Services is determined to keep these community assets alive as we believe they contribute hugely to the park experience. We fundraise, partner with non-profits, provide user-pay programs and hikes and provide direct funding in order to keep these cherished centres and their longstanding programs alive and vibrant.
Currently, the top minds from all walks of life from health professionals to research scientists to psychologists agree that children (and people of all ages) need to have nature experiences to be healthy. RLC Park Services believes whole heartedly that this is the case. Visit one of our Nature Houses and you will hear exclamations of wonder and excitement as children and adults alike are inspired by the natural world around them. Throughout the year we offer a variety of programs including education programs for school groups visiting our parks, public programs (Jerry’s Rangers kids programs and evening all-ages amphitheatre programs) in the summer time and special events celebrating our parks and communities. “These programs keep us coming back each year”, “We loved being here for your Parks Day celebrations”, and “We loved the Naturalists and hope we see you again next year!” are just a few of the comments we receive from Park Visitors. This positive response and seeing the sparkle in a child’s eye when he/she connects with the nature of the park is the reason we are dedicated to keeping these services available in our parks.
You can support park interpretation in our parks in many ways: consider visiting our Nature Houses (Goldstream is open year round, Rathtrevor Beach and Miracle Beach are open part time in May/June and full time July/August) and make a donation, make a purchase from our amazing bookstores and giftshops, enjoy a cool treat on a summer day purchased from our refreshment area, consider hosting a special event/fundraiser or participate in one of our existing programs or events.
